On October 18, 1991, at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, boxing fans witnessed a dramatic and brutal end to the unbeaten record of the charismatic young heavyweight, Tommy “The Duke” Morrison. In a contest for the WBO Heavyweight Championship, the reigning champion, Ray “Merciless” Mercer, secured a shocking and memorable TKO victory in the fifth round, in what is often cited as one of the most savage knockouts of the decade.
The Build-Up: Olympic Gold vs. Hollywood Star
The fight pitted two former amateurs with significant credentials against each other. Ray Mercer, a 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist, entered the ring with a professional record of 17-0. Though criticized at times for having “primitive” skills, his granite chin, relentless pressure, and knockout power made him a formidable champion.
His challenger, Tommy Morrison, was also a highly touted prospect, known for his flashy style and devastating left hook, boasting a 28-0 record with 24 knockouts. Morrison also held star appeal, having recently played the character Tommy “The Machine” Gunn in the movie Rocky V. The bout was a significant test for both men, with the young, fast-punching Morrison aiming to dethrone the tough veteran.
The Fight: A Tale of Two Halves
The early rounds belonged to the challenger. Morrison, quicker and utilizing his upper body movement effectively, out-boxed a sluggish Mercer through the first three rounds. He landed sizzling uppercuts and left hooks, putting the champion on the defensive and even opening a cut on Mercer’s lower lip. All three judges scored the opening three rounds in favor of Morrison.
However, Mercer’s style relied on enduring punishment and wearing down his opponents. In the fourth round, the tide began to turn. Mercer, rallying, finally started to land hard shots, forcing Morrison to back up for the first time. The champion’s overhand right became effective, and Morrison, who had spent a lot of energy throwing power punches, started to show signs of fatigue, gasping for air in a clinch. Mercer had successfully weathered the early storm and had found the crack in “The Duke’s” armor.
The Finish: An Iconic, Vicious Knockout
The beginning of the fifth round was short and decisive. Just seconds into the round, Morrison, perhaps overly confident or simply exhausted, carelessly maneuvered himself into a corner. Mercer immediately seized the opportunity, walking his opponent into a clean right hand that severely stunned him.
With Morrison frozen and essentially defenseless against the ropes, Mercer unleashed a brutal, unanswered 15-punch combination—a furious sequence of hooks and uppercuts that rendered the challenger unconscious on his feet. Morrison slumped against the ropes, out on his feet, before referee Tony Perez finally stepped in to stop the fight at the 0:28 mark of the fifth round, awarding Mercer the victory via Technical Knockout (TKO).
The knockout was a definitive, destructive blow that instantly became a fixture in boxing highlight reels. While it solidified Mercer as a top heavyweight contender, it was Morrison’s first professional defeat and a brutal setback that forced him to regroup and rebuild his career.
