From Dead on Arrival to Dangerous: Cowboys Resurrect Playoff Hopes with Thanksgiving Thriller

If you had asked anyone in Dallas two weeks ago about the Cowboys’ season, the response would have been a heavy sigh and a muttered comment about draft positioning. Sitting at 4-5-1, the Cowboys looked listless, lost, and dangerously close to a total collapse.

But the NFL is a week-to-week league, and in the span of five days, the Dallas Cowboys have flipped the script entirely.

Following a gritty Week 12 comeback against the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles and a pulsating 31-28 Thanksgiving victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cowboys (6-5-1) have done the unthinkable: they have proven they can beat the NFL’s elite.

The Week That Changed Everything

The transformation has been startling. In Week 12, Dallas trailed the Eagles by 21 points before Dak Prescott engineered a second-half rally that saved the season. They followed that emotional high by hosting Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on a short week—a scheduling spot that usually spells doom.

Instead, the Cowboys looked like contenders.

The offense, which has been inconsistent much of the year, finally found its explosive gear. The addition of George Pickens is paying massive dividends; his ability to stretch the field has opened up the intermediate routes for CeeDee Lamb, who torched the Chiefs for 112 yards and a touchdown.

”We know who we are now,” Prescott said in his post-game press conference. “We’re late to the party, but we’re here.”

The Math: Why They Aren’t Safe Yet

Despite the euphoria, a sober look at the standings reveals a harsh reality: The Cowboys are still in a deep hole.

At 6-5-1, Dallas currently sits effectively as the 10th seed in the NFC. The bizarre 40-40 tie against the Packers in Week 4 continues to haunt them. Because of that tie, they lag behind the cluster of 7-win and 8-win teams (like the Seahawks and 49ers) in winning percentage.

The Cowboys do not control their own destiny. Even if they win out, they need help. They need the teams above them—specifically the Packers and Seahawks—to stumble.

The Gauntlet Ahead

The “reward” for beating the Chiefs is perhaps the toughest game on their schedule. Next Thursday, the Cowboys travel to face the Detroit Lions (7-4) in Ford Field.

It is a brutal turnaround. The Lions are physical, well-coached, and fighting for the NFC North crown. If Dallas loses in Detroit, they drop to 6-6-1, and their playoff probability likely dips below 20%.

Remaining Schedule:

  • Week 14: @ Detroit Lions (TNF)
  • Week 15: vs. Minnesota Vikings
  • Week 16: vs. LA Chargers
  • Week 17: @ Washington Commanders (Christmas Day)
  • Week 18: @ NY Giants

To feel secure, Dallas likely needs to go 4-1 in this final stretch to finish 10-6-1. A 3-2 finish puts them at 9-7-1, leaving them at the mercy of complex tiebreakers that currently do not favor them.

The Verdict

The Cowboys are no longer the “same old Cowboys” who fold in big moments—at least not this week. Beating the Eagles and Chiefs in back-to-back games is a resume-defining achievement.

But the hole they dug in September and October is deep. They have climbed halfway out, but the ground is still slippery.

Current Playoff Probability: 38%

Prediction: The season comes down to next Thursday in Detroit. Win there, and the Cowboys likely punch their ticket. Lose, and the math starts to close in.
