SEATTLE — For 59 minutes on Sunday, the NFL world was living in a Philip Rivers fever dream.

Less than a week after unretiring at age 44 to answer an SOS call from the Indianapolis Colts, the legendary quarterback had the Super Bowl-contending Seattle Seahawks on the ropes at Lumen Field. But in a game defined by grit and defense, it was a kicker’s leg that finally snapped the storybook ending.

Jason Myers drilled a 56-yard field goal with just 29 seconds remaining—his franchise-record sixth of the day—to lift the Seahawks (11-3) to a gritty 18-16 victory over the Colts (8-6).

”Old Man” River Rolls

Wearing the horseshoe for the first time since January 2021, Rivers looked less like a grandfather of 10 and more like the fiery Pro Bowler who terrorized defenses for nearly two decades.

Despite having only three days of practice to learn Shane Steichen’s playbook, Rivers was sharp, efficiently managing the game and avoiding the disastrous turnovers that often plagued his later years. His highlight of the day came in the second quarter when he fired a dart to Josh Downs for an 8-yard touchdown—Rivers’ first NFL touchdown pass in 1,799 days.

”I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have the jitters,” Rivers admitted post-game, sporting his trademark bolo tie. “But once you get hit that first time, it’s just football. I really thought we had ’em there at the end. It hurts, but shoot, I loved being out there with these guys.”

Rivers finished the day 19-of-29 for 215 yards and one touchdown, proving he still has enough arm talent to compete at the highest level.

The “Legion of Zoom” Stalls

While Rivers provided the emotional spark, the Colts’ defense played championship-caliber football. They completely stifled the Seahawks’ high-powered offense, keeping Geno Smith and his weapons out of the end zone for the entire 60 minutes.

However, “bending but not breaking” proved fatal. The Seahawks stalled in the red zone repeatedly but were bailed out by Myers, who was automatic from distances of 47, 52, 46, 32, 30, and finally, the 56-yard game-winner.

”We played our tails off,” said Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin. “To hold that offense to zero touchdowns in their house? You expect to win that game. We just couldn’t close it out.”

Playoff Implications

The loss is a brutal blow for Indianapolis. At 8-6, they have now lost four straight games and are clinging to their playoff lives in a crowded AFC wild-card race. With rookie Riley Leonard and Daniel Jones both injured, it appears the Colts will ride with Rivers for at least one more week.

”Philip gave us a chance to beat one of the best teams in football today,” Steichen said. “He’s our guy moving forward.”

For Seattle, the win wasn’t pretty, but it keeps them neck-and-neck with the Rams for the NFC West title. They survived a trap game against a ghost from the past, but they’ll need to find the end zone if they want to make a serious run in January.

As for Rivers? He wasn’t ready to talk about next week just yet.

”I’m gonna go home, see the family, and ice my shoulder,” Rivers laughed. “Then we’ll see about the 49ers.”
