MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Philadelphia Eagles head into U.S. Bank Stadium this Sunday for a pivotal matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, but all the buzz surrounds the man under center for the opposition: Carson Wentz.

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell officially named the former Eagles signal-caller the starter this week, as rookie J.J. McCarthy continues to recover from an ankle injury. For Eagles fans, the sight of Wentz wearing purple and gold will undoubtedly dredge up a tidal wave of memories—from the MVP-caliber peaks of 2017 to the tumultuous end of his tenure in midnight green.

While Wentz himself has downplayed the emotional significance, telling reporters the matchup “feels like multiple lifetimes ago,” the “Carson Wentz Bowl” narrative is impossible to ignore. His previous meeting against the Eagles came in 2022 as a Commander, a game Philadelphia’s defense dominated with nine sacks in a 24-8 victory. Now, the 32-year-old veteran gets another shot at his former team, backed by a Vikings offense that has found a spark under his direction.

Stopping the Wentz-Jefferson Connection

The Vikings (3-2) are coming off a bye and have gone 2-1 with Wentz at the helm. He has found chemistry with star wideout Justin Jefferson, feeding him for over 120 receiving yards in back-to-back games.

For an Eagles defense that has struggled to generate consistent pressure and stop the run recently, containing the Vikings’ potent attack is paramount. Coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit ranks near the top of the league in defensive yardage allowed, but they must improve a run defense that sits in the bottom third of the NFL. This is where the trench battle comes into play. The Eagles’ defensive front, anchored by Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, needs to win decisively against a patchwork Minnesota offensive line to pressure Wentz and limit the ground game.

Eagles Offense Seeks Consistency

On the flip side, the Eagles (4-2) are looking to snap a two-game skid and reignite their own offense. The biggest concern remains the sluggish run game. Despite having Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley, the Eagles have not found the explosive, dominant ground attack that defined their recent success. Barkley has yet to break 90 rushing yards in any game this season.

This Sunday could be the opportunity for the Eagles to get back on track. The Vikings’ defense, while effective in generating pressure via the blitz under coordinator Brian Flores, ranks poorly against the run. If the Eagles’ offensive line can open holes, a heavy dose of Barkley could be the prescription to control the clock and set up play-action for Jalen Hurts.

Hurts and the passing attack have the star power in A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert to exploit any holes. However, they must be mindful of Flores’ aggressive, blitz-heavy scheme, which has stifled opposing quarterbacks.

The Prediction

This is a must-win for the Eagles to reassert themselves atop the NFC East. Despite the Wentz narrative and the Vikings coming off a rest week, the Eagles hold the superior roster talent. If the defense can limit the big play and the running game can finally deliver, Philadelphia can escape Minnesota with a tight victory.

Final Score Prediction: Eagles 27, Vikings 20
